Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy, also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT, sends acoustic pressure waves into tissue to restart healing in long-lasting tendon and soft tissue problems. Logos Physical Therapy offers shockwave therapy for chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions in Perth Amboy and Somerville, New Jersey.
How shockwave therapy works
A handheld applicator delivers acoustic waves (also called acoustic wave therapy) to the sore tissue. The waves are meant to increase blood flow and prompt the body to repair the area. It is used for problems that have lasted and have not improved with other care.
Ask your therapist which type of device is used, since radial and focused shockwave work at different depths.
Conditions it is used for
Long-lasting tendon pain is the focus.
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain; see foot and ankle pain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis elbow; see elbow pain
- Shoulder tendon problems; see shoulder pain
What to expect
A session is brief and can be uncomfortable.
In the clinic
Treatment is usually a short series of sessions, and it is part of a plan that also includes exercise.
Who should not have it
Tell your therapist if you take blood thinners, have a clotting disorder, are pregnant, or have a tumor or open growth plates near the area.
Cost
Call us to ask about cost; shockwave therapy is often not covered by insurance.
