What is behind your shoulder pain

The shoulder moves more than any other joint, which makes it easy to overload.

Rotator cuff tendinitis and tears

The four rotator cuff muscles steady the joint. Overuse or injury can inflame or tear them, making it hard to lift your arm.

Impingement and bursitis

Tissue can get pinched under the bone at the top of the shoulder, causing pain with reaching overhead.

Frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) stiffens the joint and takes patience; steady mobility work helps it along.

Instability, dislocation and labral tears

A dislocated shoulder or a labral tear can leave the joint feeling loose. Strengthening and control training are the focus.

Night pain and trouble lifting your arm

Shoulder pain at night and a feeling that you can’t lift my arm are the two things patients mention most. Both point your therapist toward which tissues are irritated and which movements to protect while you heal.

Pain that starts in the neck and refers to the shoulder is covered on neck pain. Tennis and golfer’s elbow are on elbow pain.

How we treat the shoulder

Treatment pairs hands-on care with the strength the joint is missing.

  • Manual therapy and joint mobilization
  • Rotator cuff strengthening
  • Scapular stabilization, so the shoulder blade supports the arm properly
  • Preparation for surgery and recovery afterward if surgery turns out to be right; see post-surgical rehab
  • You can come to Logos with a physician’s referral or ask for care directly.

Questions we hear about shoulder pain

A rotator cuff tear does not always need surgery, and shoulder bursitis often settles with the right movement and strength work. Shoulder problems in athletes are also covered on sports injury rehab.
