Hip Pain
Hip pain can come from the joint itself, the tendons around it or the lower back, and physical therapy sorts out which and strengthens what is weak. Logos Physical Therapy treats hip bursitis, hip arthritis, labral tears and groin and hip flexor strains in Perth Amboy and Somerville, New Jersey.
Where your hip pain is coming from
Where it hurts points to the cause.
Outer hip pain
Hip bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy (greater trochanteric pain syndrome) cause outer hip pain, often when you lie on that side at night.
Hip arthritis
Stiffness and a deep ache with walking point to hip arthritis. Strengthening and mobility work keep you moving.
Labral tears and hip impingement
A hip labral tear or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) can cause a pinch in the front of the hip when you sit or squat.
Groin pain and hip flexor strains
These show up in sport and with sudden pushing off, and they heal with graded loading.
Hip pain that is really back pain
Pain in the buttock or around the hip can start in the lower back. If your leg also tingles, see sciatica; if it is mostly in the back, see back pain. Hip pain when walking that comes with knee pain is covered on knee pain.
Treatment combines manual therapy, joint mobilization, hip and glute strengthening and gait training. Before or after a hip replacement, see post-surgical rehab. You can come to Logos with a physician’s referral or ask for care directly.
Questions we hear about hip pain
A hip flexor strain hurts in the front of the hip when you lift your leg, and hip pain lying on side is a common sign of bursitis. Hip problems in athletes are covered on sports injury rehab.
